How Many Pointe Shoes Do You REALLY Need?

One of the most common questions I get as a pointe shoe fitter is, "How many pairs of pointe shoes do I really need?" The answer varies depending on your level of training, how much pointe work you do, and how well you care for your shoes. Let's break it down.

Beginner Dancers (1-2 Pairs at a Time)

If you're just starting pointe, you can typically get by with one pair of shoes. Since beginners spend less time on pointe and are still developing their strength, their shoes are subject to less stress and last longer. Most first timers will grow out of their shoes before they die. Having said that, it is ill advised to wear a pair of pointe shoes longer than 3 months.

Intermediate to Advanced Dancers (2-4 Pairs at a Time)

As dancers increase their training hours and the level of difficulty, their shoes wear out more quickly. Intermediate and advanced students may need two to four pairs of shoes at any given time. It is advisable to rotate shoes, allowing each pair to dry completely between uses, which helps prolong their lifespan. Never wear the same pair two days in a row! Having multiple pairs also ensures you're never caught without a good pair when one unexpectedly dies.

Pre-Professional and Professional Dancers (4+ Pairs at a Time)

Professional dancers can go through a pair of pointe shoes in a single rehearsal or performance. Most advanced dancers keep at least four or more pairs in rotation, sometimes with different options for various types of choreography. Some companies even provide dancers with shoes. I realize this is not the case for most of our customers! My first job at 14 (selling ice cream at the Bamba Shack in East Norwalk) was out of necessity, my parents needed a little help keeping me in shoes! We have a very generous bulk discount structure (see below) that will help offset the cost.

Special Considerations

  • Summer Intensives: If you're attending a summer intensive, you’ll likely need at least one pair per week to last through the program.

  • Competitions & Performances: Always keep an extra “performance pair” that is broken in but still supportive. Do not get caught empty handed! I've seen many last minute water bottle disasters and other crises.

  • Footwear Rotation: If you’re dancing several days a week, rotating between multiple pairs will help extend their life and prevent injuries.

Final Thoughts

Every dancer is different, and pointe shoe needs vary based on an individual's flexibility, strength, and workload. Consulting with an experienced fitter (like at Attitude Dance!) can help you determine the right number of pairs for your schedule. And remember, ordering ahead is crucial, especially with ongoing supply chain delays—you absolutely cannot wait until your last pair is dead!

Hope that helps! Please reach out if you are falling short of your pointe shoe stock. See you soon!
