How To Nail Your Audition

Audition season for summer programs can be an exciting time for dancers—it’s your opportunity to showcase your skills and take the next step in your dance journey. However, it can also be stressful if you’re not fully prepared. The key to a confident and successful audition is planning ahead and having everything you need for success. Here’s my guide to being prepared!

1. Do Your Research

  • Why it’s important: Knowing what to expect helps you walk into the audition room with confidence.
  • Tips:
    • Research the program you’re auditioning for. Understand their style, requirements, and expectations.
    • Check audition details like time, location, dress code, and any fees.
    • If you're still wondering which program is for you, check out our summer intensive interviews here. Let me know if you'd like to contribute!

2. Focus On Your Technique

  • Why it’s important: Auditions are as much about precision as they are about artistry. Clean technique shows your dedication and training.
  • Tips:
    • Spend some time perfecting critical elements like turns, jumps, and extensions.
    • Focus on areas where you tend to struggle, but don’t neglect your strengths!
    • Don't overthink any of it.

3. Choose the Right Attire

  • Why it’s important: What you wear can make a lasting impression and make you feel like a million bucks.
  • Tips:
    • Wear a clean, well-fitted leotard in a color that stands out.
    • Bring extra pairs of tights, pointe shoes, and any other footwear required for the audition. YOU NEVER KNOW!!!
    • Style your hair neatly and securely. Add something fun to your bun!

4. Pack Your Dance Bag the Night Before

  • Why it’s important: A single forgotten item can throw you off your game.
  • Tips:
    • Extra tights, leotards, and shoes.
    • Water bottle and healthy snacks.
    • Hair supplies like ties, bobby pins, and hairspray.
    • Foot care products like blister pads or toe tape.
    • Sewing kit!

5. Showcase Your Personality

  • Why it’s important: Directors and judges want to see more than just your technique—they want to see your passion for dance and the unique qualities you bring to the stage.
  • Tips:
    • Walk in with confidence and a positive attitude. A smile and eye contact go a long way.
    • Be yourself and let your personality shine, both in your dancing and in how you carry yourself.
    • Stay professional, courteous, and focused—remember, you’re auditioning from the moment you walk through the door.

6. Be Ready for Anything

  • Why it’s important: Auditions can be unpredictable, with unexpected combinations, changes, or challenges. Being adaptable is key.
  • Tips:
    • Stay calm and focused, even if you make a mistake—how you recover is often more important than the mistake itself.
    • Listen carefully to corrections and apply them immediately to show your coach-ability.
    • Be prepared for long waits and bring a book or headphones to help you stay relaxed.
Preparation is the key to confidence during audition season. By organizing your schedule, perfecting your technique, and approaching auditions with a positive attitude and good manners, you can walk into every audition ready to impress.
