"My Shoes Are Fine": The Biggest Competition Season Mistake

YAGP season is upon us! It's hard to keep all of your ducks in a row, but if you’re thinking:

“I think my shoes are okay…”
“We’ll deal with it closer to competition”
"I like dancing on dead shoes"
"I hate breaking in a new pair"
"I don't have time for a fitting"

That’s actually your sign to come in now. At this point in the season, having a pair of shoes that are "fine" usually means shoes that are okay in the studio, but won't hold up on stage when you need them the most. Unstable, unattractive and unreliable. It's usually nothing dramatic, until it is! Every spring, after the dust has settled, I speak to dozens of dancers who regret not stocking up before their competition. Your shoes are a key component to your success as a dancer.

Waiting until the last minute is often what creates the most stress. Inventory options become more limited, (we're still dealing with a supply crisis!) there’s no time to properly break in a new pair, and small fit issues that would have been easy to address earlier suddenly feel overwhelming. The goal isn’t new shoes for the sake of new shoes—it’s peace of mind and preparedness.

It's my job to help dancers take the guesswork out of competition preparation—whether that means confirming their current shoes are the right fit, planning a dedicated performance pair (with a backup), or making small fit or sewing adjustments. The dancers who walk on stage feeling calm, confident, and supported are always the ones who didn’t wait until the last minute.

Click here and come in for a check up or book a virtual fitting! Hope to see you soon.
